Second grade is a sensational year of learning. Students have a great time exploring and experiencing various themes. Students learn about fairy tales, legends, friendships, mysteries, Native Americans and space by participating in shared reading groups, guided reading groups and literature circles. Students are also given the chance to express themselves during writing workshop. Students are asked to write about a selected topic or to brainstorm their own ideas. The goal of writing workshop is to teach students the steps of the writing process. The stages are: prewriting, first draft, revising, editing and publishing. The math program is unlike "traditional" programs which emphasize one "right" answer. Everyday Mathematics helps the students to become problem solvers. The program helps students see math all around them in their everyday lives. It helps them to see and learn a variety of strategies, rather than enforcing the "one right way" philosophy. The science program involves the students in exciting and fun-filled hands-on experiments. This program consists of four units. Each unit touches on many concepts and teaches these concepts through a variety of hands-on science experiments. The units are Show Time (light and sound), The Great Outdoors (ecosystems), What's Up (space) and Dinosaur Museum (changes of the Earth). Social studies has some topics that are integrated with the language arts themes. Social studies themes are the 50 states, Heroes and Heroines, Native Americans, Rules and Laws, and Communities. The Health program is called "The Great Body Shop." This program engages the students in fun role playing activities, decision making situations and discussions of challenges that students might encounter in the future. There are ten different units that are discussed throughout the year. The units are: Let's Stay Safe, How You Think, The Wide World Of Food, Your Heart, Small But Strong, When I Feel Afraid, Babies- And How You Grew, Drugs Are Dangerous, Germs- They Make You Sick, Me and My Skin and Muscles in Motion. |
