We engage in many different types of reading in fourth grade such as: whole group reading small group reading individual reading teacher read aloudOur program includes an anthology which contains high quality literature from different genres, broken down into thematic units. It teaches specific reading concepts and strategies.

Activities from the anthology address all levels of knowledge including comprehension, analysis, synthesis and evaluation.

Additionally, spelling and vocabulary are taken from the stories in the anthology. We also read many novels which cover the themes of flexibility, courage and convictions, tolerance, poetry, inferencing, and imagination.

While reading a novel the students will participate in individual reading conferences, guided reading, teacher led discussions, and literature circles. There are many activities and skills that go along with each novel. Each class has been exploring various novels.

Through the use of these novels the children are learning how to become active readers and to take responsibility for understanding what they read. Journal entries, "Bookmarks", oral and written comprehension questions, and discussion are among the methods used to promote this goal.

Writer’s Workshop Writer's Workshop consists of process writing which follow the steps of: Pre writingFirst Draft Revision/ Editing Publishing We learn to write for several different purposes (persuasion, information, description), to different audiences, and different types of writing (prose, poetry, research, short stories).

We will use various media to publish including computers and alphasmarts. Each week we will be involved in a writing activity. Each student will maintain a writing portfolio. At the end of each quarter, students review their published writings and pick out the pieces that they are most proud of. These are kept together in their portfolio. Throughout the year it allows child to look back and evaluate where they’ve come and where they are headed.
