1st Grade

First grade promises to be a fun and exciting experience!

In Language Arts the students will learn how to apply many different reading strategies on their journey to becoming independent readers. Reading for pleasure is encouraged, please continue to share this wonderful experience. We will focus on various phonics rules and spelling patterns to help children build upon their writing skills.  Look forward to reading many wonderful stories written by your child!

Math in first grade is very exciting! The program, Everyday Mathematics offers children a broad background in mathematics. It highlights a problem-solving approach with opportunities for discussion and communicating mathematically. This year the students will be introduced to the concepts of time, money, fractions, basic addition and subtraction facts, geometry and measurement. The children will learn these topics through hands-on exploration, partner and small group activities. You will enjoy seeing your child's mathematical understanding grow!

In Social Studies this year the students will be exploring the concepts of food, clothing and shelter as basic needs. In addition we will study the significance of American Symbols.

In Science our boys and girls will be examining animal habitats, properties of matter, force and motion, and how a garden grows

Parent volunteers are an important part of the first grade curriculum. Please contact your child's teacher if you are interested in assisting.  We look forward to seeing you!
