World Language
Ms. Anne LandersWorld Language Program Bernards Township Public Schools offers Spanish at the elementary school level. All students in grades one through five study Spanish for the entire school year. Please contact Ms. Mary Asfendis, Supervisor of World Languages at 908-204-2585, ext. 162, if you have any questions or comments about the program.
Why learn a world language in elementary school? In addition to developing a lifelong ability to communicate with more people, children may obtain other benefits from early language acquisition, including overall school performance and enhancing problem-solving skills. Most experts agree that the earlier a child is introduced to a second language, the greater the chances are that a child will become proficient in a language. Introducing children to alternative ways of expressing themselves and to different cultures allows for greater sensitivity and knowledge of our diverse society. Knowing a second language can ultimately provide an employment skill that can lead to a competitive advantage in the work force by increasing job opportunities.
What can parents and students do at home? Children can practice songs, words and phrases in Spanish that have been introduced in the classroom. Most importantly, providing support and encouragement to your child for foreign language and multicultural studies will assist in his/her interest in learning world languages.
