Language Arts
The fifth grade Language Arts curriculum is challenging and exciting for students.  Children are given the opportunity to read a variety of genres throughout the year.  Reading is taught both in large group and small group settings.  The students are encouraged to become better writers by using strong vocabulary words and descriptive details.  Some of the various writing projects the students do are personal narratives, mysteries, and problem-solving pieces.  Students at Liberty Corner School are always engaged in tasks throughout all content areas that involve using both reading and writing skills.

Math
Fifth grade continues using Everyday Mathematics.  Students cover number theory, estimation and calculation, geometry, fractions, decimals, percents, ratios, exponential notation, area, and so much more!  They have many opportunities to collect and work with data.  They utilize higher thinking skills to form hypotheses, test them, and represent the results.  Students are encouraged to use numerous problem solving skills and strategies, recognizing the importance of this application to the "real world".  Parents and family members are encouraged to get involved in the excitement of fifth grade mathematics.  One way to do so is to play one of the many games in the math journal.  Good Luck!

Social Studies
The fifth grade Social Studies curriculum covers a span of history from colonization to present day. While studying about significant events in our country's history, the students display their learning through group or independent projects, presentations, reports, etc.  Some field trips are included in our school year to complement the existing curriculum.  In addition, integration of the S.S. curriculum into our reading program occurs when we read several historical fiction or non-fiction books and novels.  The Nystrom Geography program is being used to easily incorporate geographical studies into our existing studies.

Science
At Liberty Corner School we would like to highlight three units of study.  We focus mainly on Measuring Time, Microbes, and Ecosystems. Through numerous hands-on lab activities students' ideas are conceptualized, tested, then evaluated.  We introduce the scientific method and focus on working through the scientific method with students.

Student Council
The fifth graders of Liberty Corner take on a leadership role with participation in the LCS Student Council.  There are two senators from each fifth grade class that are selected by their peers.  The senators meet twice a month to discuss issues their peers bring up to make improvements within our school.

Field Trips
All of our trips are activities that integrate with many areas of the curriculum.  The Weller Health Center furthers our study of family life.  Camp Bernie is a final celebration at the conclusion of fifth grade.  Students participate in team building and problem-solving activities in the great outdoors!
