Social Studies

We start the year with a thorough investigation of the Constitution of the United States.  Students learn about our basic rights and responsibilities as well as how our government is designed.  Throughout the year, fifth graders explore such controversial issues as the cause of the Civil War,  the impact of the Industrial Revolution and immigration, and the effects of the Holocaust.  A field trip to Ellis Island expands upon their understanding of immigration.

Science

Students study major units such as Plants and Ecosystems, Space, and Simple Machines.  Our fifth graders discover that plants are the basis for all ecosystems on earth.  They explore the relationships between living and non-living factors in ecosystems.  In their study of space, students investigate constellations, nebulas, and other multidimensional phenomena.  Finally, our students explore concepts of energy, work and force.

Language Arts

Students use the Dream Chasers anthology as a springboard to developing essential reading and writing skills.  They also participate in literature circles, small group reading, buddy reading, and other venues to thoroughly investigate various chapter books that link to the curriculum.  During Writing workshop the children learn to develop persuasive, expository, and narrative pieces, as well as poetry of all forms.

Mathematics     

Our Mathematics program emphasizes problem solving skills.  Students explore geometric and algebraic concepts, estimation, and probability.  They use a variety of mathematics tools such as a geometry template, compass, and calculators.  Students have fun planning to "spend" one million dollars in the "Spending Project".  In this project they also learn more about rounding, estimating, graphing, and researching.
